Artist Brian Molko accused of calling Meloni a 'fascist' and 'racist'
Rome, February 18 (Hibya) – Placebo lead singer Brian Molko is accused of insulting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after calling her a "filthy, fascist, racist" in Italian during a festival in Turin in 2023.
In August 2023, Meloni filed a lawsuit against Molko over his remarks. Prosecutors later launched an investigation and charged Molko with "insulting institutions."
On Monday, the Italian Ministry of Justice allowed prosecutors in Turin to proceed with legal action.
Under Italian law, defamation against the government, parliament, judiciary, or military can result in a fine of up to 5,000 euros and direct summons to court.
While public defamation can lead to a prison sentence of up to three years, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio’s spokesperson stated that Molko’s imprisonment is unlikely.
