Bayramov: UN Charter and international law are the foundation of lasting peace
New York, May 27 (Hibya) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov called for strengthening international law, sovereign equality, and the UN-centered international system during his speech at the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
Bayramov spoke at the UN Security Council open debate titled “Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-centered international system.”
Bayramov emphasized that lasting peace and security can only be achieved through full compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law. He stated that relations between states should be based on the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, stressing that these principles should not be applied selectively or with double standards.
Bayramov said that the UN Security Council should become more representative, accountable, and effective in order to better reflect today’s global realities, calling for comprehensive reform.
Recalling that Azerbaijan had previously experienced violations of international law and the consequences of conflicts, Bayramov highlighted the importance of justice, accountability, and effective multilateral cooperation.
Bayramov also stated that Azerbaijan continues to contribute to regional stability and peacebuilding, supporting constructive and multilateral cooperation on international platforms.
