Canadian leaders react to US tariff threats
Ottawa, August 25 (Hibya) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne commented on the United States' tariff threats, stating that the country should maintain a firm stance in negotiations.
According to CCTV, Canadian political leaders issued statements regarding the latest tariff threats from the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in Quebec that they were ready for negotiations if the United States changed its approach. Carney stated that Canada would also take part in talks if the US came to the negotiating table "with the right attitude and a genuine understanding of partnership."
Carney also said Canada would not accept the notion that it is a subsidiary of the United States or that it should be placed at a disadvantage in relation to the US.
Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, meanwhile, called for a firm stance during consultations held in Montreal. Champagne said federal support was on the way for businesses affected by the 50 percent tariffs.
Champagne said work was continuing to build a resilient economy, adding that their priorities were to build a strong Canadian economy, remove interprovincial trade barriers, diversify the economy and carry out major projects in the country.
