Denmark approves defense bill granting the US access to air bases
Copenhagen, June 12 (Hibya) – The Danish parliament voted by a large majority in favor of a new defense agreement granting the United States broad authorities, including “unfettered access” to air bases on Danish territory.
The agreement, sharply criticized by politicians and human rights experts, means that US troops in Denmark will fall under US jurisdiction. US forces will gain access to Danish air bases in Karup, Skrydstrup and Aalborg, and American troops and military police will receive authority over Danish civilians at and around these locations.
If US troops commit a crime in Denmark, they will be tried under the US legal system rather than Danish law. The US will also be allowed to deploy personnel, store and maintain military equipment, and conduct training exercises in Denmark and abroad.
Despite rising tensions between the US and Denmark — triggered by Donald Trump’s unprecedented attempts to seize Greenland, a strategically vital part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and reports of increased US intelligence activity in the region — a large majority in the Danish parliament backed the agreement: 94 MPs voted yes, 11 voted no.
