Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis spoke at the discussion titled “A New Geopolitical Order: Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean at the Crossroads of Global Change,” held as part of The Economist's 6th Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit.

Drawing attention to Thessaloniki's position connecting the Balkans with the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, Gerapetritis said the region is of critical importance for Europe and regional stability.

Stating that significant geopolitical changes are taking place around the world, Gerapetritis said the current period is one of the most difficult since the Second World War. He added that major changes are also taking place along the geostrategic routes of energy and connectivity.

Gerapetritis said that three political phenomena are occurring simultaneously: changes in the global geopolitical landscape, the transformation of political communication, and the impact of social media, which is reshaping the media environment.

Noting that social media has changed the way people access information, Gerapetritis said this also creates opportunities for misinformation and disinformation activities on a global scale.
