The referendum on resuming membership negotiations had been expected to take place in 2027, but it could occur as early as this August.

Reykjavík’s ruling coalition had promised to hold a referendum by 2027 on restarting EU accession talks after the previous government froze negotiations in 2013. However, this timeline is being accelerated amid geopolitical turbulence, following Washington’s decision to impose tariffs on Iceland and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Greenland.
