Joint statement by European leaders in Berlin
Berlin, 15 December (Hibya) – European leaders declared their determination to take steps, in cooperation with the United States of America (USA) and Ukraine, to ensure Ukraine’s security, sovereignty and prosperity.
European leaders meeting in Berlin announced that they are working closely with the United States and Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. In the joint statement, the leaders welcomed the recent coordination demonstrated by the teams of President Zelenski and President Trump.
The statement highlighted the following key points:
“It was emphasized that Ukraine’s security, sovereignty and prosperity are an integral part of Euro-Atlantic security. Continued support will be provided to maintain Ukraine’s armed forces at a level of 800,000 troops in peacetime and to ensure they have the capacity to deter conflicts. A US-backed ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism will be established, providing early warning and countermeasures against potential attacks. It was stated that legally binding measures would be taken to ensure peace and security in the event of any future armed attack. Resources will be allocated for Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic recovery, and compensation for the damage caused by Russia will be on the agenda. Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will be strongly supported. It was underlined that international borders cannot be changed by force and that the final decision on territorial issues will be left to the Ukrainian people.”
The leaders stressed that all parties must work intensively to reach an agreement for lasting peace and called on Russia to accept a ceasefire in line with Trump’s peace plan. The statement bears the signatures of Merkel, Stubb, Macron, Kristersson, Frederiksen, Meloni, Schoof, Store, Tusk, Starmer, Costa and von der Leyen.
