Lahbib: Attacks against them are violations of international humanitarian law
Brussels, August 18 (Hibya) - European Union (EU) Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib called for compliance with international humanitarian law in a statement ahead of World Humanitarian Day.
European Union (EU) Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib paid tribute to aid workers who risk their lives while serving in difficult crisis zones, highlighting the losses suffered and violations of rights.
Sharing the toll of violence against aid workers, Lahbib said, “In 2026 alone, 83 aid workers were killed, 36 were abducted and 98 were injured.”
Commending the efforts of personnel working in crisis zones, Lahbib said, “Ahead of World Humanitarian Day, we honor those who risk everything to reach people in desperate situations, from Sudan and Gaza to Ukraine.”
Lahbib concluded her statement by emphasizing international law: “Attacks against them are violations of international humanitarian law.”
