An article by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov titled “International Cooperation in the Arctic: Challenges and Opportunities” was published on Arctic.ru.

In his article, Lavrov said the arrival at the Port of Murmansk of a container ship that departed from China on August 19 via the Northern Sea Route was an important development for Arctic maritime transportation. Lavrov said the route is an important part of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor.

Addressing Russia's policies in the Arctic region, Lavrov said his country aims to preserve peace and stability in the region, reduce threats to national security and create favorable conditions for economic development.

Lavrov noted that Russia cooperates in the Arctic with various countries, particularly China and India, and that there are also opportunities for cooperation with Brazil, Indonesia, Iran and other BRICS countries.

Lavrov claimed that military exercises by NATO countries and NATO itself in the Arctic region are increasing tensions. Arguing that these activities pose a direct threat to Russia's security, Lavrov alleged that Western countries intend to turn the Arctic into a new front aimed at obstructing Russia's development.

Referring to the Arctic Council, Lavrov said Russia is ready for the Council's work to resume fully. He said this depends on all sides acting in good faith and taking the legitimate interests of participants into account.

Lavrov said Russia's foreign policy in the Arctic region would remain comprehensive and pragmatic, adding that Moscow supports developing the region as part of a broader Eurasian area of security and cooperation.
