Leyen: We stand with the Iranian people who are courageously marching for their freedom
Brussels, January 13 (Hibya) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the loss of life and the excessive use of force in Iran, stating that additional sanctions against those responsible for repression would be proposed swiftly.
European Commission (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement regarding developments in Iran and the new restrictions planned to be implemented.
Assessing the situation in Iran and the EU’s current stance, von der Leyen said: “The rising number of casualties in Iran is horrifying. I strongly condemn the excessive use of force and the continued restriction of freedoms. The European Union has already placed the entire Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps under the human rights sanctions regime.”
Referring to the next steps and support for the Iranian people, von der Leyen concluded: “In close cooperation with HRVP Kaja Kallas, additional sanctions against those responsible for repression will be proposed swiftly. We stand with the Iranian people who are courageously fighting for their freedoms.”
