Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commemorated the police officers who lost their lives and former Prime Minister Aldo Moro on the anniversary of the Via Fani ambush.

Recalling the date of the incident, Meloni said, “On March 16, 1978, police officers Giulio Rivera, Oreste Leonardi, Raffaele Iozzino, Domenico Ricci and Francesco Zizzi were cowardly killed in the tragic ambush on Via Fani in Rome.”

Emphasizing that it was one of the most painful events in the history of the Republic, Meloni said, “This ambush led to the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, and Moro’s lifeless body was found on May 9. This event, a difficult day for everyone, opened a painful chapter in the history of our Republic.”

Expressing gratitude to those who died in the line of duty, Prime Minister Meloni concluded her statement by saying, “Today, I want to remember these public servants who gave their lives to protect and defend state institutions and the Republic with courage and sacrifice. While expressing our endless gratitude to them, I also extend my thanks to all the uniformed women and men who work daily to defend the nation and its citizens.”
