Prevot: Abolishing the death penalty is an important step for human rights
Brussels, August 12 (Hibya) – Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot welcomed the Lebanese Parliament's decision to abolish the death penalty, describing it as an important step forward for human rights and a strong example for the region.
In his statement, Prevot said, “I strongly welcome the Lebanese Parliament's historic decision to abolish the death penalty.” Noting that Belgium opposes the death penalty always and everywhere, Prevot said his country has long worked for its abolition worldwide.
Prevot said the decision is even more meaningful considering the suffering and insecurity experienced by the Lebanese people in recent years. He recalled that during his visit to Beirut earlier this year, he emphasized Belgium's support for Lebanon's sovereignty and its people.
Prevot said Belgium supports those working to strengthen Lebanon's institutions and advance reforms, adding, “Today's courageous decision shows that progress is possible even under the most difficult circumstances. Lebanon can continue to count on Belgium.”
