US stops ship heading to Iran
Washington, August 11 (Hibya) – The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a Panama-flagged commercial vessel, which the US alleged was violating its naval blockade of Iran, was stopped in the Gulf of Oman.

In a statement, CENTCOM said the vessel named “Vela Nova” was heading toward a port in Iran and attempting to violate the US blockade of Iran. The statement said the ship’s steering system was disabled and that, after the civilian crew failed to comply with warnings from US forces, two Hellfire missiles were fired from a US Navy MH-60 helicopter at the ship’s engine room.
The statement said the vessel’s progress toward Iran was halted. As of August 11, CENTCOM forces had reportedly diverted 55 commercial vessels attempting to breach the blockade, disabled 3 vessels and boarded 2 vessels.
CENTCOM said US forces operating in the Middle East are “on high alert, ready to use lethal force and ready to act.”
