Prevot: Strait of Hormuz is vital for global trade, security and maritime stability
Brussels, April 2 (Hibya) - Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot called for international cooperation, stating that “the Strait of Hormuz is vital for global trade, energy security and maritime stability.”
Belgian Foreign Minister Prevot assessed the economic and security impacts of the ongoing closure in the Strait of Hormuz. Prevot said, “Here in Belgium, families feel this in fuel prices and energy bills. Our open economy is also directly affected. However, the impact is more devastating in developing countries with rising fuel, food and fertilizer prices.”
Prevot noted that he attended the Foreign Ministers’ meeting held at the initiative of the United Kingdom and hosted by MP Yvette Cooper, saying, “We are all united in our commitment to protect freedom of navigation and to uphold the urgency of a coordinated international response.”
The meeting emphasized the need to use necessary political and diplomatic tools, including economic sanctions, and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Prevot stated that Belgium is ready to support “safe, lawful and uninterrupted navigation within the framework of full respect for peace, international law and long-term regional stability,” and added that it could contribute with its expertise in mine clearance.
