Sudanese army declares victory in the capital
Stockholm, March 28 (Hibya) – The Sudanese army said yesterday that it had taken control of much of the capital, Khartoum, after expelling members of the RSF rebel militia. Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023, when fighting erupted between the army and RSF in the city.
The army announced it had taken control of most areas in Khartoum. The statement said RSF forces had either retreated or been forcibly removed. However, the RSF claimed their troops had merely repositioned and were still working toward their objectives.
While the capture of Khartoum marks a significant moment in the conflict, analysts warn that a swift end to the war is unlikely, as RSF is deeply entrenched elsewhere in Sudan and is attempting to form a parallel government.
Since April 2023, two of Sudan’s most powerful generals – Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and his former ally Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo of the RSF – have been engaged in a bloody power struggle, each controlling their own strongholds.
This brutal battle for power, triggered by disputes over restoring civilian rule following the ousting of former president Omar al-Bashir and a subsequent military coup, has resulted in over 28,000 deaths and 11 million displaced people, in what the UN describes as the “most devastating humanitarian and displacement crisis” in the world.
The army claims it controls most of the country, but nearly the entire region of Darfur – an area the size of France – remains under RSF control, according to a map published by SAF. RSF also maintains footholds in neighboring West and North Kordofan states.
RSF had been fighting to maintain its presence in Khartoum, but a series of recent losses forced the militia to flee key positions in the city. On Wednesday, SAF released a video on social media which it said showed RSF fighters fleeing after the army retook the airport.
