Trump Orders Active-Duty Soldiers to Prepare for Deployment to Minnesota
Washington, January 19 (Hibya) – Two defense officials said Sunday that the Pentagon confirmed it has ordered about 1,500 active-duty soldiers in Alaska to prepare for a possible deployment to Minnesota.
Two battalions of the 11th Airborne Division are likely to be joined by additional troops from units across the country to provide logistics and other support. One official asked to remain unnamed while discussing internal talks.
The two infantry battalions in Alaska are trained for operations in the Arctic and Indo-Pacific, priorities of the Trump administration. Although they are not trained in crowd control, they are equipped for cold-weather operations, which could be useful in Minnesota.
No deployment order has been issued yet, but the move signals that the White House may take a tougher approach following President Donald Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell rising protests in Minneapolis.
Even though the president threatened to activate that law after protests erupted following a shooting by ICE officers, Trump said Friday that there is “no reason” to invoke it “at this time.”
