Trump wants to tighten election laws
Washington, March 26 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring voters to prove their U.S. citizenship before voting. According to the U.S. Constitution, the administration of elections is the responsibility of each state.
According to the executive order signed by Trump yesterday, American voters will need to prove their citizenship in order to vote in elections.
The directive is likely to face legal challenges, as the U.S. Constitution grants states the authority to manage elections.
Under current law, non-citizens are not allowed to vote in U.S. elections. However, it is estimated that around nine percent of American voters—over 20 million people—lack documentation proving their citizenship.
In addition, all ballots in federal elections must be received no later than Election Day. Eighteen U.S. states currently accept ballots that are postmarked on or before Election Day, even if received later.
The directive aims to encourage state governments to share voter information with the federal government and to prosecute those who violate election laws. The U.S. Department of Justice will be tasked with prioritizing enforcement in states that do not share such information.
States that do not comply with the directive may risk losing federal funding.
