UN concerned about escalation of Iran-US tensions
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for diplomatic engagement to resolve differences between the United States and Iran amid rising military activities and rhetoric in the Middle East.
According to CCTV, Guterres said he was calling for diplomatic engagement to address disputes between the United States and Iran in an environment marked by increased military activities and harsh rhetoric. His spokesperson reiterated the call on Friday.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, “The rising military activities, exercises and the growing military and naval presence in the region, accompanied by sharp rhetoric, seriously concern us. We encourage the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to continue engagement through diplomacy to resolve their differences.”
The call for restraint followed an official letter sent by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.
In his letter, Iravani stated that Iran was prepared to exercise its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and emphasized that any military attack would be met with a firm and proportionate response.
He added that in such a case, all bases, facilities and assets of hostile forces in the Middle East would be considered legitimate targets under Iran’s defensive measures.
Iravani also warned that the United States would bear full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences in the event of further provocations.
