The Department said in a statement that immigrant visa processing for migrants from 75 countries will be temporarily halted.

It noted that the suspension will remain in effect until the United States is assured that new immigrants will not “abuse” the resources of the American people. “The measure covers many countries, including Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, whose migrants have been found to frequently become a public burden after arriving in the United States,” the statement said.

Emphasizing that the Trump administration will always adhere to the ‘America First’ principle, the statement added: “Necessary steps are being taken to ensure that the generosity of the American people is no longer exploited.”
