Weel: Freedom of religion and belief is a fundamental human right
Amsterdam, January 19 (Hibya) – Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs David van Weel said that data from the 2026 World Watch List reveal increasing pressure on Christians worldwide.
Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs David van Weel reviewed the 2026 World Watch List report, which focuses on communities persecuted for their religious beliefs around the world.
Emphasizing that freedom of belief is a fundamental right, Weel said: “Today I received the 2026 World Watch List. The figures are alarming: worldwide, 388 million Christians face persecution or discrimination because of their faith. This points to the need for urgent action.”
Referring to the Dutch government’s foreign policy vision for protecting religious minorities, Weel concluded: “Freedom of religion and belief is a fundamental human right. Therefore, the Netherlands is committed to protecting religious minorities and people who cannot freely express their beliefs worldwide.”
