Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Baqaei recalled that August 12 marks the day when the four Geneva Conventions were adopted in 1949.

Baqaei said the conventions form the fundamental rules of the law of war, drawing attention to the principles of humanity, distinction, military necessity, proportionality and the prohibition of unnecessary suffering.

Accusing the United States of threatening civilian infrastructure, Baqaei argued that attacks on infrastructure, bridges and power plants constitute war crimes.

Baqaei said the international community, states party to the Geneva Conventions and Switzerland, as the depositary of the conventions, could not remain indifferent to such violations.

Baqaei said Common Article 1 of the Geneva Conventions requires not only respect for the conventions but also ensuring respect for them, arguing that silence in the face of threats to civilian infrastructure weakens the international legal order.

Baqaei said normalizing threats to target civilian infrastructure would endanger the safety of essential facilities such as hospitals, electricity grids, bridges and water facilities.

Delivering a message of determination for Iranians, Baqaei said no storm could move a mountain from its place and no trial could break those who continue on the path of resolve.
