Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that extending the fuel tax reduction on diesel until September 5 was a positive step.

Tajani said he supported financing the reduction without introducing new taxes and opposed imposing a new tax on the “excess profits” of energy companies. Instead, he said a tax advance payment mechanism had been used, created through dialogue with energy companies and the advance payment of dividends by major energy groups.

Tajani said this method enables the state to support citizens quickly and described the measure as an example of the “social market economy” approach.

Tajani said the goal of protecting families’ purchasing power had been achieved, adding that the liberal economic approach should continue without viewing companies as enemies.
