U.S. President Donald Trump said that if the U.S. Supreme Court were to cancel the global trade tariffs, it would lead to “total chaos.”

In a message shared on social media, Trump said that if the Supreme Court rules against the tariffs, “we are finished.” The decision is expected to be issued no earlier than Wednesday.

Trump noted that reversing the tariffs would be difficult and that businesses and countries could seek refunds. “It would take years to understand what figures we are talking about, and who should be paid, when and where,” he said, adding: “This would be total chaos and would make it nearly impossible for our country to pay.”

In addition, the broad global tariffs first announced by Trump last April are being challenged in court by small businesses and 12 U.S. states, which argue that the president exceeded his authority by imposing new taxes on imported goods.
