US and UK Announce Broad Sanctions on Russia's Energy Sector
Washington, January 11 (Hibya) - The US and UK on Friday announced sanctions against Russia's energy sector, including oil giant Gazprom Neft, just days before President Joe Biden is set to leave office.
The US Treasury Department announced that by adding more than 180 ships as well as Russian oil giants Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas to the sanctions list, it was fulfilling "the G7 commitment to reduce Russia's energy revenues."
At the same time, the UK government also announced sanctions against these two companies, stating that their profits "fund Putin's war chest and facilitate the war in Ukraine."
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: "Taking action against Russian oil companies will drain Russia's war budget, and every ruble we take from Putin helps save Ukrainian lives."
Russian state news agencies reported that Gazprom Neft called the sanctions "baseless" and "illegitimate."
Russian state media quoted a company representative saying: "Gazprom Neft considers the inclusion of its assets on the sanctions list as baseless, illegitimate, and contrary to the principles of free competition."
