Geneva, October 30 (Hibya) – WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that a new cholera outbreak in South Sudan is threatening 34,000 people, including 15,000 refugees and returnees.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus stated that a new cholera outbreak in South Sudan is threatening 34,000 people, including 15,000 refugees and returnees, emphasizing that swift action is essential to control the outbreak and prevent further spread.
Ghebreyesus noted that WHO is supporting the government with critical laboratory services, disease surveillance, and establishing cholera treatment units, adding:
“Vaccination is an important tool to control the outbreak, but for over 2 years, there has been a severe vaccine shortage, and demand has more than doubled. We urge manufacturers to increase cholera vaccine production and distribution. Lives depend on it.”
