Merz: The leadership in Tehran must return to a negotiated solution
Berlin, February 28 (Hibya) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the leadership in Tehran must end the violence against its own people and return to a solution through negotiations.
Chancellor Merz said that the Iranian people have the right to determine their own future. Noting that Germany is in close cooperation with the United States, Israel and regional partners, Merz stated: “Our commitment to peace and security in the region and to Israel’s security continues.”
Merz said that in recent weeks the regime in Tehran has brutally suppressed the peaceful protests of brave Iranian women and men, adding:
“Instead of protecting its own people, the Iranian leadership ignored repeated calls to end the violence. At the same time, it has created dangers far beyond the region by advancing its military nuclear and missile programs. It has contributed to regional instability and supported international terrorism.”
Stating that the United States has long sought a negotiated solution, Merz said: “Iran has not reached a credible agreement to end its military nuclear program, nor has it committed to reducing its missile program or halting its destabilizing activities.”
Merz added that Germany calls on Iran to stop military attacks against Israel and other partners in the region, and that the leadership in Tehran must end violence against its own people and return to a negotiated solution.
