Plan to name Milan airport after Berlusconi sparks outrage in Italy
Rome, July 10 (Hibya) - In Italy, reactions against the decision to name Milan's main airport after controversial former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi have grown, with the city's mayor calling the decision "madness".
After Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said that the Italian civil aviation authority Enac would make the final decision to rename Malpensa airport "in memory of my friend Silvio", more than 35,000 people signed a petition calling on Giorgia Meloni's government to stop the plan.
Milan Mayor Beppe Sala accused Enac of succumbing to the pressure of right-wing politicians and claimed that the decision was made without consulting the SEA company that operates Milan's airports.
Berlusconi was born in Milan and died in this city last year at 86. His party, Forza Italia, is one of the partners in Meloni's ruling coalition.
