US and Russia begin talks in Saudi Arabia on Ukraine ceasefire
Riyadh, March 24 (Hibya) – US and Russian officials have begun talks in Saudi Arabia to mediate a limited ceasefire in Ukraine, which Donald Trump hopes will be a first step toward lasting peace.
Ukraine and Russia have agreed in principle to suspend attacks on energy infrastructure for one month, following Trump’s meetings with leaders of both countries last week. However, it remains unclear when and how the ceasefire will be implemented and whether it will extend beyond energy to include hospitals, bridges, and other vital public services.
US officials held their first talks with Ukraine on Sunday evening and separately met with Russia on Monday; most of the meetings took place at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh.
The US is expected to shuttle between the two countries to finalize details on shipping security in the Black Sea and negotiate additional measures.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a podcast with far-right journalist Tucker Carlson: "The ultimate goal is a 30-day ceasefire, during which we’re discussing a permanent one. We’re not far from it."
