European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that they had discussed the idea of Canada becoming the first associate member of the European Union (EU), emphasizing that their focus was on how the process could contribute to the prosperity and security of citizens.
In a post on her social media account, von der Leyen said that discussions had addressed what Canada's associate membership with the EU would mean in practice. Von der Leyen stated, "We are focusing on the prosperity and security of our people."
Von der Leyen noted that the aim was to strengthen cooperation through closer policy development, participation in EU programs and interinstitutional collaboration. "We are only at the beginning of a journey," she remarked.
