Von der Leyen held talks with Omani and Kuwaiti officials
Brussels, March 1 (Hibya) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks with the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, and the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
Following the rising tensions in the Middle East, Ursula von der Leyen engaged in diplomatic contacts with the leaders of Oman and Kuwait.
During the meetings, Iran’s attacks on civilian and strategic targets in the region were condemned, and diplomatic solutions were discussed.
Speaking about her meeting with the Sultan of Oman, von der Leyen said, “This evening I spoke with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. I strongly condemned Iran’s attacks on Omani territory and expressed Europe’s full solidarity. I am grateful for Oman’s role in the indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran.”
She added, “This crisis underscores the importance of further strengthening the political dialogue between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council.”
Referring to Iran’s attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in Kuwait, von der Leyen said regarding her meeting with the Emir of Kuwait, “Following yesterday’s unacceptable attacks, which resulted in damage to Kuwait International Airport, I expressed Europe’s full solidarity and support for Kuwait.”
She concluded, “With His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, we discussed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and place Iran on a path toward peaceful transition and diplomatic dialogue. This is the only viable way to halt the escalating cycle of violence and prevent further escalation.”
